Turkish Humour: What Makes the People of Turkey Laugh

If you want to understand Turkey, you need to understand Turkish humour. The Turkish people are renowned for their wit, resourcefulness, and ability to laugh at life, often in ways that outsiders might find both baffling and brilliant.

Bargains, Haggling, and the Joy of a Deal

Turks love a bargain — and when we say love, we mean it’s practically a national pastime. If you’re selling something, be prepared for haggling that could rival a World Cup negotiation. Every trick in the book will be tried to bring down the price, from “I saw it cheaper next door” to “Does it come with free tea?”

The irony is that the moment the deal is done, the item becomes the best car, sofa, or TV in the world — and, naturally, it’s always for sale again… at the “right” price, of course. Speaking of sofas and TVs, don’t be surprised if the plastic is still stuck on them for protection. Turks love to preserve things, and new purchases are sometimes kept under plastic for years, just in case they ever need to sell or protect them from dust.

What Makes Turks Laugh?

Turkish humour is wonderfully varied:

  • The underdog always gets a cheer. Villagers love seeing the little guy triumph against impossible odds.
  • Şaban, the famous actor played by Kemal Sunal, is still loved decades later for his bumbling, good-hearted characters. His movies are timeless — expect laughter, a few tears, and a lot of “I know someone like that!” moments.
  • Turks also have a fondness for a good cry over traditional melodramatic Turkish movies, often followed by a hearty laugh at the absurdity of it all.

Funny Observations and Idioms

Turkish people love picking holes in everything, from products to situations — a kind of humour that’s equal parts clever and mischievous. Some popular sayings illustrate their humour perfectly:

  • “Ayağını yorganına göre uzat.” – “Stretch your foot according to your blanket.” In other words: live within your means, but it’s always said with a wink.
  • “Dereyi görmeden paçaları sıvama.” – “Don’t roll up your trousers before seeing the stream.” Don’t count your chickens — but imagine the laughter if someone literally tried to cross a river with rolled-up trousers.

And here are a couple of jokes that still get people giggling:

  • “How do you make a Turkish tea?” – “Give it to your neighbour, then ask for it back!”
  • “Why don’t ghosts visit Turkish bazaars?” – “Even spirits can’t handle the haggling!”

Money Speaks

Turks have a healthy obsession with money, and humour often revolves around clever ways to save, haggle, or make a little extra. Funny money-related sayings and jokes are common:

  • “Paranın suyu çıkmaz.” – “Money doesn’t have water.” Meaning: money can’t last forever, often said with a laugh when someone spends too fast.
  • “Ak akçe kara gün içindir.” – “A white coin is for a black day.” Put simply: save money for a rainy day… or just laugh at how rarely it’s used.
  • “Parayı veren düdüğü çalar.” – “He who pays blows the whistle.” The one who spends the money always has the final say, usually with a grin.

Funny Turkish jokes about money:

  • “Why did the man bring a ladder to the bank?” – “He heard the interest rates were climbing!”
  • “Why do Turkish people love to haggle for carpets?” – “Because it’s cheaper than therapy and twice as fun.”

Money, bargaining, and financial cleverness are a source of endless amusement in Turkey. Even while haggling for a car, the same person will proudly show off their bargain purchase as if it were a priceless treasure — all while joking about how much they “saved.”

Laughing at Themselves

One of the best things about Turkish humour is that people don’t mind laughing at themselves. They are quick to joke about the little absurdities of their own culture — as long as it’s in good faith. Whether it’s haggling, keeping plastic on sofas, or shedding a tear during a classic film, Turks know how to combine heart, humour, and honesty in a way that makes life both funny and memorable.
