Eye Tests

Eye Tests

The process of buying optical products in Turkey differs noticeably from the experience in the UK, particularly in the way eye examinations and optical retail services are organised. While many UK opticians provide both the eye test and the glasses in the same appointment, Turkey typically separates these stages. It is customary to visit a specialist eye doctor—an ophthalmologist or an eye clinic—for a full examination and prescription. Most optical shops do not carry out eye tests themselves, although a small number do offer this service, particularly in larger cities.

After receiving the prescription from the eye doctor, customers take the results directly to an optician. This ensures that the optician has every technical detail required to prepare accurate lenses, including sphere, cylinder, axis and, where needed, additional values such as near-vision add-ons. This separation of services can feel unusual to visitors from the UK, but it is a well-established system in Turkey and generally results in very precise prescriptions thanks to the involvement of medical specialists.

When visiting private opticians in Turkey, it is worth being aware of the strong culture of upselling. Many shops are known for encouraging customers to choose higher-priced frames or premium lens coatings, even when more affordable options would be perfectly suitable. While the quality of service is usually high, customers should feel confident asking for clear price breakdowns, comparing products and declining extras they do not need. Shopping around is common practice, as prices can vary significantly between different optical retailers even for identical products.

Despite these differences, the overall buying process in Turkey is straightforward once the system is understood. The combination of medical eye testing and a wide range of optical retailers means that customers can obtain well-made glasses, often at competitive prices compared to the UK. Understanding the local customs—especially the separation between medical eye tests and optical retail services—helps ensure a smooth experience when purchasing optical products in Turkey.
