Malkara is a town and district in Tekirdağ Province, in the Marmara region of Turkey. It is surrounded by flat and low hilly terrain and is situated just 55 km from Tekirdağ and 190 km from Istanbul. Like Keşan and Çorlu, the town has a history of occupation by the Persians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, and, in later times, the Bulgarians and Russians.
Malkara serves as an administrative and commercial centre for the surrounding agricultural lands, which are known for their high-quality wheat and sunflower seeds. Dairy farming and meat cattle farming are also significant industries, with cows, sheep, and goats being the main livestock. There are many poultry farms, and chicken meat and egg production levels are high. A number of large factories support these industries.
The town is not really a tourist destination. As towns go, it has everything you would expect in terms of infrastructure and services, but very little to offer the traveller. Most people get only a brief glimpse of the town as they pass by it on the main highway.
Malkara, Tekirdağ ilinin Marmara bölgesinde yer alan bir kasaba ve ilçedir. Düz ve hafif engebeli bir araziyle çevrilidir ve Tekirdağ’a 55 km, İstanbul’a ise 190 km uzaklıktadır. Keşan ve Çorlu gibi, bu kasaba da Persler, Yunanlılar, Romalılar, Bizanslılar, Osmanlılar ve daha sonra Bulgarlar ile Ruslar tarafından işgal edilmiştir.
Malkara, çevresindeki tarım arazilerinin idari ve ticari merkezi olarak hizmet vermektedir. Bu topraklar, kaliteli buğday ve ayçiçeği tohumlarıyla ünlüdür. Süt hayvancılığı ve etlik sığır yetiştiriciliği de önemli olup, çoğunlukla inek, koyun ve keçi yetiştirilmektedir. Pek çok tavuk çiftliği bulunmaktadır ve tavuk eti ile yumurta üretimi yüksek seviyelerdedir. Bu endüstrileri destekleyen birçok büyük fabrika da vardır.
Kasaba, aslında bir turistik destinasyon değildir. Altyapı ve hizmetler açısından beklenebilecek her şeye sahip olsa da, gezginlere sunabileceği çok fazla bir şey yoktur. Çoğu kişi, kasabayı ana yol üzerinden geçerken kısa bir süreliğine görür.
