Keşan is a town in Edirne Province, Türkiye. It has a population of around 65,000 but it gets a lot of tourists during the summer months. The town is 84 km from Tekirdağ and just 20 km from the border of Greece. For visitors crossing into Türkiye from Greece at the Ipsala border crossing, this is the first large Turkish town that they will encounter.
Keşan has a long history that dates back to the Thracians. The Persians, Romans, Greeks, the Byzantines and Bulgarians have all contributed to the rich cultural history of this town. The town was invaded by the Russians in 1829 and again in 1878 and then by the Bulgarians in 1913. Under the Ottoman Empire the town had an almost equal number of Greeks and Muslims living here as recently as 1914. It was ceded to the Republic of Turkey in 1922.
Keşan is a town that most people just glimpse briefly as they pass through en route to Istanbul or Canakkale. A large structure on the hill by the main highway often catches peoples attention. It looks like a large wooden recreation area. In fact it used to be a restaurant but must have fallen on bad times as it is now a *pavyon.
Keşan is actually a thriving agriculture and commercial town with a vibrant city centre. Even in the winter it is busy and acts as the main commerce and shopping centre for the nearby towns and villages. In the summer months the town centre can get quite hectic with traffic jams and parking problems.
If you are looking for exciting things to do in Keşan you might be a little disappointed. Whilst it has everything that you would expect of a modern Turkish town it has very little in terms of places to visit. There is one exception. It does have a very good town museum. If you are passing through Keşan and you do not have much time then head straight for this little gem near the town centre.
The museum was opened on the 18th March 2024. Housed in an impressive building it excels in its detailed approach to showcasing the lives of local trades people and their craftmanship. The museum also covers in detail the connection with Çanakkale and its fallen heroes. Yunanistan’dan Türkiye’ye geçiş yapan ziyaretçiler için Ipsala sınır kapısından geçerken karşılaştıkları ilk büyük Türk kasabasıdır.
Keşan’ın tarihi, Traklara kadar uzanır. Persler, Romalılar, Yunanlılar, Bizanslılar ve Bulgarlar, bu kasabanın zengin kültürel geçmişine katkıda bulunmuşlardır. Kasaba, 1829 ve 1878 yıllarında Ruslar, 1913’te ise Bulgarlar tarafından işgal edilmiştir. Osmanlı İmparatorluğu döneminde, 1914 yılına kadar kasabada neredeyse eşit sayıda Yunan ve Müslüman yaşamaktadır. Keşan, 1922 yılında Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’ne katılmıştır.
Keşan, çoğu kişinin İstanbul veya Çanakkale’ye giderken sadece kısa bir süre gördüğü bir kasabadır. Ana yol üzerindeki tepede büyük bir yapı, genellikle insanların dikkatini çeker. Burası büyük bir ahşap rekreasyon alanı gibi görünse de, aslında bir restoran olarak hizmet veriyordu ancak kötü zamanlar geçirmiş olmalı, şu anda pavyon olarak kullanılmaktadır.
Keşan, aslında gelişmiş bir tarım ve ticaret kasabasıdır ve canlı bir şehir merkezine sahiptir. Kış aylarında bile yoğundur ve çevredeki kasaba ve köyler için ana ticaret ve alışveriş merkezidir. Keşan’da heyecan verici şeyler yapmayı bekliyorsanız, biraz hayal kırıklığına uğrayabilirsiniz. Modern bir Türk kasabasından bekleyeceğiniz her şeye sahip olmasına rağmen, ziyaret edilecek çok fazla yer yoktur. Bir istisna vardır: Kasabada çok iyi bir şehir müzesi bulunmaktadır. Keşan’dan geçiyorsanız ve çok zamanınız yoksa, şehir merkezine yakın bu küçük müzeye gitmenizi öneririz.
Müze, 18 Mart 2024’te açılmıştır. Etkileyici bir binada yer alan müze, yerel zanaatkarların yaşamlarını ve el işçiliğini detaylı bir şekilde sergilemesiyle öne çıkmaktadır. Müze ayrıca, Çanakkale ile olan bağlantısını ve şehitlerini de ayrıntılı olarak ele almaktadır. Keşan’ın Türkiye tarihine yaptığı katkılardan gurur duyan bu müze, zengin kültürel mirasa sahip müzisyenlerle dolu bir kasabanın geçmişe dair etkileyici ve iyi düşünülmüş bir yaklaşım sergileyerek, hem kurucularına hem de Keşan kasabasına büyük bir övgü sunmaktadır.
