Vehicle running costs in Turkey

🚗 Vehicle Taxes and Annual Costs in Turkey

Owning a car in Turkey involves several mandatory ongoing costs, all of which are monitored by national authorities. These include road tax (MTV), compulsory traffic insurance, and regular inspection. Understanding these ensures your vehicle remains fully legal and roadworthy, while avoiding fines and complications.

💰 Motor Vehicle Tax (MTV)

The Motorlu Taşıtlar Vergisi (MTV) is Turkey’s annual road tax, paid in January and July each year. The rate depends on the vehicle’s engine capacity, age, and market value.

As of 2025, typical MTV costs are approximately:

Vehicle TypeAnnual Cost (₺)Approx. £Approx. €Approx. $
Small car (under 1.3L, 6+ years old)₺2,500£62€70$75
Mid-size car (1.6L, 3–6 years old)₺6,000£150€170$180
Large car (2.0L, under 3 years old)₺15,000£375€420$450
Luxury SUV (3.0L+, new)₺60,000£1,500€1,680$1,800

Payments can be made through the Gelir İdaresi Başkanlığı (GİB) website, e-Devlet website, authorised banks, ATMs, or tax offices. Late payments incur automatic interest, and unpaid MTV can block notary sales or inspection renewals.

🛡️ Compulsory Traffic Insurance

Every vehicle must have zorunlu trafik sigortası, a legal minimum insurance covering third-party damage. Policies are valid for one year and must be renewed before expiry.

In 2025, prices typically range from ₺3,000 to ₺10,000 (£75–£250 / €85–€280 / $90–$300) depending on driver history, vehicle class, and region.

Optional kasko insurance (comprehensive cover) is strongly recommended to protect your own vehicle from theft or damage, costing roughly ₺6,000–₺20,000 (£150–£500 / €170–€560 / $180–$600) per year.

🔧 Vehicle Inspection (Muayene)

Periodic inspections are carried out by TÜVTÜRK and are compulsory:

  • Private cars: every two years
  • Motorcycles and commercial vehicles: annually

In 2025, the inspection fees are:

  • Cars: ₺1,100 (£28 / €31 / $33)
  • Motorcycles: ₺600 (£15 / €17 / $18)
  • Light commercial vehicles: ₺1,500 (£38 / €42 / $45)

If a vehicle fails inspection, the owner has one month to make repairs and return for a re-test, which is free if completed within that period.

⛽ Additional Annual Costs

Motorway and bridge tolls (HGS/OGS): require an electronic tag linked to your bank account or prepaid balance.
Fuel costs: are high compared to many countries — in 2025, petrol and diesel average ₺45–₺50 (£1.12–£1.25 / €1.25–€1.40 / $1.35–$1.50) per litre.
Parking: municipal or private parking typically ranges from ₺20–₺60 (£0.50–£1.50 / €0.55–€1.70 / $0.60–$1.80) per hour in urban areas.

✅ Summary

Vehicle ownership in Turkey involves three core expenses: MTV road tax, compulsory traffic insurance, and periodic TÜVTÜRK inspection. All are payable online or at banks, and compliance is automatically tracked through the national system. By staying up to date with these costs, both Turkish citizens and foreign residents can drive legally and avoid fines.
