Turkey’s healthcare system has developed significantly over the past two decades and is now considered one of the most advanced and accessible in the region. According to international rankings, Turkey consistently performs well in terms of hospital infrastructure, medical technology and the availability of qualified doctors. The country has invested heavily in building modern city hospitals equipped with the latest diagnostic and treatment facilities. These hospitals operate to international standards and provide services in a wide range of medical fields, from general medicine to highly specialised surgery. As a result, Turkey has also become a leading destination for medical tourism, attracting patients from Europe, the Middle East and beyond.

The Turkish healthcare system is divided into two main sectors: public (state) healthcare and private healthcare. The state system covers most routine medical services, emergency treatment, hospital stays and prescriptions. Foreign visitors can access the Turkish healthcare system in several ways depending on their status and insurance coverage. Visitors with travel or health insurance should check whether their policy covers treatment in Turkey, as many international insurance providers have agreements with Turkish hospitals. In such cases, the hospital can bill the insurance company directly or assist with reimbursement paperwork. Visitors from countries that have reciprocal healthcare agreements with Turkey may be eligible for certain treatments under those arrangements, though it is always wise to confirm the details before travelling.

If a foreign visitor does not have health insurance, they are still entitled to receive medical care in Turkey, but they must pay for all services in full at the time of treatment. Emergency care is available to everyone regardless of insurance status, and hospitals are legally required to provide life-saving assistance before discussing payment. Prices for private medical care vary depending on the procedure and hospital, but they are typically lower than equivalent treatments in many European countries. For long-term residents or expatriates, obtaining Turkish health insurance or enrolling in the SGK system is recommended, as it provides comprehensive coverage and peace of mind.

Dentistry in Turkey deserves a separate mention, as it has become one of the most popular medical tourism sectors in the country. Turkish dental clinics offer a wide range of services including implants, veneers, crowns and cosmetic procedures, often at a fraction of the cost compared to Western countries. Many clinics provide package deals that include accommodation and transfers, making them especially attractive to international visitors. The standard of dental care is generally high, with modern facilities and skilled practitioners, many of whom have studied or trained abroad.

However, it is important for visitors to exercise caution when selecting a clinic for dental or cosmetic treatment. While many reputable and professional clinics exist, some unlicensed or poorly regulated operators have received negative attention in international media for providing substandard care. Prospective patients should always check reviews, verify credentials, and ensure that any clinic they choose is registered with the Turkish Ministry of Health.
