Rhodiapolis is an ancient city located in the mountainous region of Lycia in southern Turkey, near the modern town of Kumluca in Antalya Province. Perched on a hilltop with sweeping views of the surrounding valleys and coastline, the site is relatively lesser known compared to other Lycian cities, yet it holds considerable historical and archaeological interest. The city is believed to have been founded by Rhodian colonists, which is reflected in its name, and it flourished particularly during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Rhodiapolis was a member of the Lycian League and benefited from the prosperity that came with Roman rule, developing notable public structures and monuments.
One of the most remarkable figures associated with Rhodiapolis is Opramoas, a wealthy and influential Lycian philanthropist from the Roman period who funded numerous public works and charitable causes not only in his own city but across the region. His legacy is recorded in a large and detailed inscription found at the site, which is among the longest in the ancient world and has provided scholars with a wealth of information about Lycian society and civic life. The ruins of Rhodiapolis include a theatre, a bath complex, a cistern, an agora and a number of sarcophagi, all nestled among pine-covered slopes that add to the site’s serene atmosphere.
Although Rhodiapolis is not as frequently visited as some of the more famous sites in the region, recent restoration efforts have improved access and visibility, making it an increasingly attractive destination for those interested in ancient history, archaeology and quiet exploration. The combination of its historical significance, striking landscape and tranquil setting makes Rhodiapolis a hidden gem among the ancient cities of Lycia.
Rhodiapolis, Türkiye’nin güneyinde, Antalya ilinin Kumluca ilçesi yakınlarında, dağlık Likya bölgesinde yer alan antik bir şehirdir. Tepede kurulu olan şehir, çevresindeki vadilere ve kıyıya bakan güzel manzaralara sahiptir. Diğer bazı Likya şehirleri kadar tanınmasa da, tarihi ve arkeolojik açıdan oldukça önemlidir. Şehrin Rodoslu kolonistler tarafından kurulduğu düşünülür ve ismini de buradan alır. Rhodiapolis, özellikle Helenistik ve Roma dönemlerinde gelişmiş ve Likya Birliği’nin bir üyesi olmuştur. Roma egemenliği altında birçok kamu yapısı ve anıt inşa edilmiştir.
Bu antik şehirle bağlantılı en ünlü kişi, Roma döneminde yaşamış olan zengin ve yardımsever bir Likyalı olan Opramoas’tır. Opramoas, sadece kendi şehri için değil, bölgedeki birçok şehir için de yardım ve hizmetlerde bulunmuştur. Bu yardımlar, şehirde bulunan çok uzun bir yazıtta detaylı şekilde anlatılmıştır. Bu yazıt, antik dünyadaki en uzun yazıtlardan biridir ve araştırmacılar için Likya toplumu hakkında önemli bilgiler sunar. Rhodiapolis’te tiyatro, hamam, su sarnıcı, agora ve lahitler gibi kalıntılar bulunmaktadır. Bu yapılar çam ağaçlarıyla çevrili bir alanda yer alır ve şehre huzurlu bir hava katar.
Rhodiapolis, bölgedeki daha ünlü antik kentler kadar çok ziyaret edilmese de, son yıllarda yapılan restorasyon çalışmaları sayesinde daha ulaşılabilir hale gelmiştir. Tarihi önemi, etkileyici manzarası ve sakin ortamıyla Rhodiapolis, Likya’nın gizli kalmış hazinelerinden biridir.
