Assos [ Behramkale ]

Assos or Behramkale, is a small historic town in the Ayvacık district of Çanakkale. It is a tourist resort and home of the ancient Aeolian city. The ancient part is high on a hillside and the walk takes you through the old stone houses where a host of people are ready to sell you souvenirs or provide you with tea and coffee along the way.

This is best avoided in the peak summer season as it gets very busy with the coach tour operators. Far better that you visit in the spring or autumn. There are some spectacular views at the top of the hill. The ruins of the temple of Athena are 236 meters above sea level.

The harbour and village below is a popular destination in the summer and parking is limited so you might have to be prepared to walk down and back up the steep hill. However, it is worth seeing and there are some good restaurants and hotels here.
