The origins of the museum lie in the personal passion of Rahmi M. Over many years he built a private collection that grew to include model ships, classic cars, engineering models, scientific devices, and many other items. This collection became the foundation of the museum when it opened its doors in 1994. Since then, donations and new acquisitions have helped it grow into one of the richest industrial collections in the region.
Visitors to the museum encounter an extraordinary variety of objects. There are road vehicles, beautifully restored vintage cars, motorcycles, railway locomotives, carriages, trams, boats, and even a fully restored submarine. The aviation section features historic aircraft, engines, and scale models, while other galleries display clocks, telegraphs, gramophones, scientific instruments, toys, and hands-on educational equipment. Koç Museology and Cultural Foundation, which also supports sister museums in Ankara and on Cunda Island, helping to preserve Turkey’s industrial heritage on a national scale.

Its exhibition space, which covers more than 27,000 square metres, places it among the largest industrial museums in Europe. While some major museums abroad focus on a single theme, such as maritime history or railways, this museum stands out for its diversity, bringing land, sea, air, communication, and scientific history together in one coherent and accessible experience. This broad scope has given it an important place among the world’s notable industrial museums.
Beyond its historical importance, the museum plays a vital educational role. Its interactive science displays, children’s workshops, and hands-on exhibits make complex engineering concepts easy to understand. Large industrial objects, such as vessels, aircraft, and locomotives, are preserved here with great care, helping to safeguard pieces of technological history that might otherwise have been lost.

İstanbul’daki Rahmi M. Koç Müzesi, sanayi, ulaşım ve teknoloji tarihine adanmış, şehrin en dikkat çekici kültürel simgelerinden biridir. Haliç’in kuzey kıyısında, tarihi Hasköy semtinde yer alan müze; Lengerhane olarak bilinen eski Osmanlı çapa dökümhanesi ile restore edilmiş Hasköy Tersanesi olmak üzere iki etkileyici binada hizmet vermektedir. Bu yapılar birlikte, etkileşimli sergiler ve binlerce ilgi çekici eserle dolu geniş bir sergi alanı oluşturur.
Müzenin kökeni, Türk iş dünyasının önde gelen isimlerinden ve bir hayırsever olan Rahmi M. Koç’un kişisel tutkusuna dayanır. Mekanik objelere, bilimsel cihazlara ve teknolojinin gelişimine duyduğu ilgi sayesinde yıllar boyunca özel bir koleksiyon oluşturdu. Gemi modellerinden klasik otomobillere, mühendislik maketlerinden bilimsel aletlere kadar pek çok parçayı bir araya getirdi. Bu koleksiyon, müzenin 1994 yılında kapılarını açtığı sırada temelini oluşturdu. O günden bu yana, bağışlar ve yeni alımlar sayesinde koleksiyon, bölgenin en zengin endüstriyel koleksiyonlarından biri hâline geldi.
Müze ziyaretçileri, olağanüstü çeşitlilikte eserlerle karşılaşır. Karayolu araçları, özenle restore edilmiş klasik otomobiller, motosikletler, lokomotifler, vagonlar, tramvaylar, tekneler ve hatta tamamen restore edilmiş bir denizaltı burada sergilenir. Havacılık bölümünde tarihi uçaklar, motorlar ve ölçekli modeller bulunurken, diğer galerilerde saatler, telgraflar, gramofonlar, bilimsel cihazlar, oyuncaklar ve etkileşimli eğitim materyalleri yer alır. Müzenin gerçekten özel olmasını sağlayan şey, sanayi ve bilim tarihinin pek çok farklı alanını tek bir çatı altında toplayarak teknolojinin gelişimine dair bütüncül bir yolculuk sunmasıdır.
Rahmi M. Koç’un vizyonu, yalnızca eski makineleri korumak değil; canlı, ilgi çekici ve sürekli gelişen bir müze yaratmaktı. Ona göre müzeler merak uyandırmalı ve özellikle gençlere gerçek bir eğitim değeri sunmalıdır. Müze, Türkiye’nin endüstriyel mirasını ulusal ölçekte korumaya yardımcı olan Rahmi M. Koç Müzecilik ve Kültür Vakfı tarafından yönetilmekte olup Ankara ve Cunda Adası’ndaki kardeş müzeleri de desteklemektedir.
Yıllar içinde Rahmi M. Koç Müzesi uluslararası tanınırlık kazanmıştır. 27.000 metrekareyi aşan sergi alanı ile Avrupa’nın en büyük endüstri müzeleri arasında yer almaktadır. Dünyadaki birçok büyük müze tek bir temaya odaklanırken, bu müze karayolu, denizcilik, havacılık, iletişim ve bilim tarihini bir araya getirerek daha geniş ve erişilebilir bir deneyim sunar. Bu kapsamlı yaklaşım, müzeyi dünyanın önemli endüstri müzeleri arasında özel bir konuma taşımıştır.
