Hamsikoy

Hamsikoy is a charming village located in the Trabzon Province of the Turkish Black Sea Coast. Nestled among the Pontic Mountains, it is well-known for its lush landscapes, tranquil atmosphere, and its historical significance. The village is about 50 km from the city of Trabzon and is situated at a relatively high altitude, giving it a cool and refreshing climate, especially during the summer months. Hamsikoy’s picturesque setting and proximity to both the mountains and the Black Sea make it a popular spot for nature lovers and tourists seeking a peaceful retreat.

The name “Hamsikoy” comes from the Greek word “Hamsi”, which means anchovy, a fish that has been historically significant in the region due to its abundance in the Black Sea. The village has roots dating back to ancient times, though it has primarily been shaped by the influences of Ottoman rule. Throughout history, the region was inhabited by Greeks, and in the early 20th century, it was home to Greek Orthodox communities who lived in this coastal area before the population exchanges between Greece and Turkey in the 1920s. The village’s historical and cultural heritage is still reflected in some of its architectural structures, including old houses and churches.

The village’s fertile land and the Black Sea’s humid climate make it an excellent location for agricultural activities. Farming is an essential part of the local economy, and the villagers cultivate a variety of crops. Tea, a vital agricultural product in the Black Sea region, is grown here, along with other fruits such as hazelnuts, apples, and cherries.

Hamsikoy is particularly famous for its rice cultivation. The village produces a unique variety of rice that is known for its delicious, aromatic flavor and is often used in local dishes, particularly desserts. One of the most notable local specialties is Hamsikoy rice pudding (Sütlaç), a creamy dessert made with this locally grown rice.

Additionally, the region is known for its forests and livestock farming, with dairy farming and beekeeping being common practices among the local people.

In terms of tourism, Hamsikoy is popular with those looking to experience the natural beauty of the Black Sea region. The village’s cool climate, scenic mountain views, and surrounding forests make it an attractive destination for hiking, trekking, and outdoor activities. The village is also known for its traditional wooden houses and welcoming locals. Visitors often stop by to sample the famous Hamsikoy rice pudding and enjoy the peaceful countryside.

Overall, Hamsikoy is a perfect example of the natural and cultural beauty found along the Turkish Black Sea coast, offering a blend of historical significance, agricultural heritage, and breathtaking scenery.
