Emergency Number 112 in Turkey: What It Is and How to Use It

Turkey’s national emergency number is 112, a single, unified line that connects callers to all essential emergency services. It is the Turkish equivalent of the UK’s 999, the USA’s 911, and Turkey’s own medical appointment line ALO 182, but dedicated strictly to emergencies. The system is designed to be simple, fast, and foreigner-friendly, ensuring that residents and visitors can access help quickly anywhere in the country.

What 112 Covers

When you call 112, you are automatically connected to an operator who can dispatch:

The operator determines the type of emergency and directs the appropriate team to your exact location.

Is English Spoken on 112?

Yes.
Emergency operators in Turkey are trained to assist callers in English. Large cities and tourist regions such as Istanbul, Antalya, İzmir, Muğla, and Cappadocia have strong foreign-language support. Even in smaller towns, operators will generally still understand basic English and can connect you to someone who does.

If you speak slowly and clearly, you should have no difficulty communicating.

What to Expect When You Call

  1. The operator answers with “112 Acil Çağrı Merkezi” (112 Emergency Call Centre).
If you speak English, simply begin in English—they will immediately switch or bring in an English-speaking colleague.
  2. You will be asked three basic questions:
    • What happened?
    • Where are you?
    • Is anyone injured or in danger?
  3. You do not need to know the full address.
    Operators use:
    • Mobile phone GPS
    • Nearby landmarks
    • Street names, hotel names, or shops
      to locate you.
  4. The correct emergency team is dispatched instantly while the operator stays on the line if needed.
