Turkish Motorways and Bridge Tolls
Turkey has a well-developed motorway network known as the Otoyol system, linking major cities such as Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Antalya and beyond. These roads are generally in excellent condition, providing fast and convenient travel between regions. However, they are not free to use — most Turkish motorways and bridges operate a toll system, and payments are made electronically through one of two schemes known as HGS or OGS.
Understanding HGS and OGS
The HGS (Hızlı Geçiş Sistemi) is the Fast Pass System, and it is now the most commonly used toll method in Turkey. Vehicles are fitted with a small sticker or tag placed on the inside of the windscreen, which automatically deducts the toll fee as you pass under the toll sensors on motorways, bridges or tunnels. The toll amount is then charged to a prepaid balance linked to your HGS account.
The OGS (Otomatik Geçiş Sistemi), or Automatic Pass System, uses a similar principle but relies on an electronic transponder. However, OGS is being gradually phased out in favour of HGS, and most new vehicles and rental companies now use HGS exclusively.
How to Pay or Top Up
You can top up your HGS account or check your balance at PTT post offices, participating banks, or online through official websites such as https://hgsmusteri.ptt.gov.tr. There are also private payment platforms that allow you to pay missed tolls or top up using a foreign card, although the official PTT service is the safest and most reliable option.
If you accidentally use a toll road without sufficient balance, you are normally given a 15-day grace period to make payment before fines are applied. Payments can be made at any PTT branch or through the HGS website by entering your vehicle registration number.
Using Toll Roads and Bridges in a Hire Car
For tourists hiring a car in Turkey, it is important to confirm with your rental company which toll system the car uses and how payments are handled. Most reputable rental companies — including Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Europcar, and Circular Car Hire — provide vehicles already equipped with an HGS tag. In these cases, tolls are either:
- Deducted automatically from your rental deposit, or
- Charged to your credit card after the company receives the official toll record.
Always ask for clarification before driving away, as failing to pay a toll can result in fines being charged to your card later.
Bridge and Tunnel Tolls
Two major bridges in Istanbul — the 15 July Martyrs Bridge and the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge — are both toll bridges connecting the European and Asian sides of the city. The Eurasia Tunnel, which runs beneath the Bosphorus, also charges an electronic toll. All of these crossings operate under the HGS system only; there are no cash booths.
Paying Missed Tolls
If you suspect that a toll has not been paid, you can check your vehicle registration at https://hgsmusteri.ptt.gov.tr/hgs.jsf or visit a PTT office in person. Foreigners can use a rental car’s plate number to confirm any outstanding balance. Be aware that unpaid tolls may be subject to significant fines, so it’s best to resolve them quickly.
Typical Toll Costs
Toll prices vary depending on the motorway or bridge. For example:
- Eurasia Tunnel (Istanbul): approximately ₺80 (£2.10 / €2.40 / $2.70)
- Istanbul–Ankara Motorway (O-4): around ₺150 (£3.90 / €4.50 / $5.10) for a full journey
- Izmir–Istanbul Otoyol (O-5): about ₺500 (£13 / €15 / $17) for the complete route
Prices can fluctuate based on vehicle type and exchange rates, so always check the latest fees before travelling.
Important Advice for Tourists
When hiring a car, ensure that your HGS tag is active and registered to the vehicle, and always confirm payment terms in writing. Avoid using unofficial websites or third parties for topping up, as some charge high service fees or fail to process payments properly.
If you plan to do a lot of motorway travel, it’s wise to check your balance regularly and keep receipts from toll-related payments. Remember that toll violations can sometimes take several days to appear in the system, so don’t assume everything is fine until you’ve verified it.
