Obtaining Turkish Citizenship
Turkey offers several legal routes to citizenship depending on your personal situation, residence history, investment level, or family ties. The process is administered by the General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs (Nüfus ve Vatandaşlık İşleri Genel Müdürlüğü) under the Ministry of Interior.
Becoming a Turkish citizen can provide many advantages, including visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to over 110 countries, access to public healthcare and education, and the right to live and work permanently in Turkey without restriction.
🏠 Citizenship Through Long-Term Residence
Foreigners who have lived in Turkey legally and continuously for at least five years (with a valid residence or work permit) may apply for citizenship by long-term residence.
To qualify, you must meet the following conditions:
- Have resided in Turkey without interruption for at least five years immediately before applying (a few short absences are allowed, but total time abroad must not exceed six months).
- Demonstrate sufficient and stable income to support yourself and your family.
- Show evidence of good character and respect for Turkish laws.
- Possess adequate knowledge of the Turkish language (basic conversational level).
- Have no criminal record or history of behaviour that poses a threat to national security or public order.
Applications are submitted in person at your Provincial Directorate of Population and Citizenship (Nüfus Müdürlüğü), usually located in the same building as the local Governorship (Valilik) or District Governorate (Kaymakamlık).
💍 Citizenship Through Marriage
Foreign nationals married to Turkish citizens can apply for citizenship after three years of marriage, provided the marriage is genuine and ongoing.
To qualify, you must:
- Have been married to a Turkish citizen for at least three years.
- Still be living together as a married couple at the time of application.
- Have no criminal record or actions considered a threat to public security.
- Demonstrate basic Turkish language ability to communicate in everyday situations.
Authorities often conduct interviews or home visits to confirm the authenticity of the marriage. If the marriage ends due to the death of the Turkish spouse, the foreign partner may still apply if the marriage was genuine and legally recognised.
👶 Citizenship by Birth or Descent
If either of your parents is a Turkish citizen, you automatically acquire Turkish citizenship by descent — regardless of where you were born.
Children born in Turkey to stateless parents or to foreign parents who cannot pass on nationality may also be granted citizenship under humanitarian principles.
Those who previously lost Turkish citizenship (for example, through renunciation) can generally reacquire it by applying through Turkish consulates abroad or at local population offices in Turkey.
💼 Citizenship by Exceptional Service
In certain cases, Turkey grants citizenship directly to individuals who are considered to have made or are capable of making significant contributions to the country.
This may include:
- Academics, scientists, or researchers whose work benefits Turkey.
- Businesspeople or industrialists contributing to economic growth.
- Artists, athletes, or cultural figures representing Turkey internationally.
- Individuals providing humanitarian or social benefit recognised by the Turkish state.
Such applications are by invitation and subject to approval by the Council of Ministers or the Presidency.
💰 Citizenship by Investment
Turkey’s Citizenship by Investment Programme is one of the most accessible in Europe and the Middle East. Introduced in 2017, it allows foreigners to acquire Turkish citizenship in exchange for a qualifying investment in property, business, or capital.
As of 2025, the main qualifying routes are:
- Real Estate Purchase — Invest at least $400,000 (USD) in Turkish property (residential or commercial) and hold it for a minimum of three years.
- Bank Deposit — Deposit at least $500,000 (USD) (or equivalent in other currencies) into a Turkish bank account for a minimum of three years.
- Capital Investment — Invest at least $500,000 (USD) in fixed capital approved by the Ministry of Industry and Technology.
- Government Bonds — Purchase at least $500,000 (USD) worth of government bonds and hold them for three years.
- Job Creation — Create employment for at least 50 Turkish citizens in a business approved by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security.
All investments are verified by the relevant ministries before citizenship is approved. The applicant, their spouse, and any dependent children under 18 may all obtain citizenship through a single qualifying investment.
The entire process generally takes 3 to 6 months once the application is approved.
🗣️ Language and Integration
Applicants for citizenship by residence, marriage, or descent are expected to have a basic command of Turkish, sufficient to handle everyday conversation.
There is no formal written language test, but officials may assess your ability to communicate during interviews at the population office.
You are also expected to demonstrate that you are integrated into Turkish society, familiar with local customs, and respectful of national values.
🧾 Required Documents
The required paperwork varies depending on the route but generally includes:
- Completed citizenship application form.
- Passport and valid residence permit.
- Birth certificate and (if applicable) marriage certificate, translated and notarised.
- Four biometric photos.
- Proof of income or assets sufficient to support yourself.
- Police clearance certificate from your home country and Turkey.
- Turkish language declaration or evidence of conversational ability.
For investment-based applications, additional documentation proving the qualifying investment is required, along with certification from the relevant ministry.
📅 Processing and Approval
Once submitted, applications are reviewed by the Ministry of Interior’s Directorate of Citizenship Affairs. Background checks are carried out through the national security and police systems.
If approved, the application is sent to the Presidency for final confirmation. Once signed, you will receive a Turkish national identity number and can apply for your Turkish ID card and passport.
The entire process may take anywhere from 6 months to 18 months, depending on the route and documentation. Investment cases are typically the fastest.
⚖️ Dual Citizenship
Turkey permits dual citizenship, meaning you can hold Turkish nationality alongside your existing one — such as British citizenship — unless your home country restricts it.
Dual citizens enjoy the full rights of Turkish nationals, including property ownership, inheritance rights, and access to public services.
🔑 Summary
Turkish citizenship can be obtained through long-term residence (5 years), marriage (3 years), descent, exceptional contribution, or investment (starting at $400,000 USD).
Applicants must have good character, no criminal record, and — except for investors — a basic command of Turkish. Processing is handled by the Ministry of Interior, and once approved, successful applicants can enjoy full citizenship rights, including the right to live, work, vote, and travel with a Turkish passport.
Turkey also allows dual nationality, and citizenship through investment remains one of the most efficient and respected programmes globally.
